Old-Fashioned Macaroni and Cheese

My mom has been making this recipe since before I was born. My grandmother also made it this way and it came from a 1954 Betty Crocker cookbook that we still have! It’s so delicious and very different from most mac-n-cheese’s you get today.

This makes about 6 servings.

NOTES I had to bake mine for about 54 minutes.

*If you want to watch the video of this being made, this recipe starts at the 1:45 mark.

Thanksgiving wouldn’t be the same without my mama’s mac-n-cheese!

Ingredients

  • 4 cups cooked macaroni (8 oz pkg or 2 cups uncooked)

  • 2 Tbsp butter, cut into pieces

  • 1 and 1/4 cups sharp cheddar cheese, cubed

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/4 tsp pepper

  • 2 eggs, beaten

  • 3 cups milk

  • paprika (optional)

  • buttered bread crumbs (optional)

Here’s how to make it

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

  • Combine cooked macaroni, butter, cheese and salt and pepper.

  • Place in a greased 2 qt baking dish.

  • Combine eggs and milk; pour over the macaroni.

  • Sprinkle with paprika or bread crumbs and bake uncovered at 350 degrees F for 40-50 minutes.
